Maryland Swedish Massage
What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage is the most common and best-known type of massage in the West. Swedish massage was developed in Stockholm in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor called Per Henrik Ling. The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques designed to relaxing the entire body by applying pressure to the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Other techniques include circular pressure applied to the hands and palms, tapping, stretching and bending. To reduce friction and stimulate the skin a variety of lotions are used.
Swedish massage can be slow and gentle or strong and invigorating, depending on the massage therapist's style or what the client is seeking to achieve. Swedish massage is an excellent way to increase the level of oxygen in the blood, decrease muscle toxins, and improve circulation and flexibility while easing tension. If you suffer from muscle stiffness and pain, Swedish massage can also be of great help. You may, however, need to tolerate more pressure and some temporary discomfort as part of the treatment. Known as Deep Tissue massage, this form of Swedish massage provides relief for muscle stiffness and pain. If you've never been to a spa before, or have never had a massage done, Swedish massage is a great place to start! Maryland offers a variety of excellent Swedish massage spas ranging both in price and services.
What to Expect During a Swedish Massage?
During all Swedish massages the therapist will lubricate your skin with massage oil and perform different strokes that work and warm up the muscle tissue. This procedure releases tension by breaking up adhesions, or muscle knots. Maryland Swedish massage spas provide an excellent range of specialized therapists who promote relaxation and muscle tension relief. Prior to the massage the therapist will inquiry about current injuries or other conditions that he/she should be aware of.
Swedish massage ranges form slow and gentle to strong and invigorating. You should tell your Maryland massage therapist upfront what your preference is. Things that you would want to share with your therapist also include any allergies, areas of pain or common discomfort, and other conditions, like pregnancy. It's best to avoid a Swedish massage when ill. At the end of the initial consultation you'll be instructed by your therapist to lie on the table. This may be face up or down, underneath a sheet or a towel. The therapist will exit the room, and only enter again when you are ready to begin the session.
